As many of you know, our family has started a new tradition of celebrating Pi Day. (For those of my readers wondering what Pi Day is, it is March 14 (i.e. 3-14) just like Pi which is 3.14.) We found out about this day thanks to Robby's best friend growing up who told him about it a few years ago. See when Robby was a teen he went through a period where he would memorize the digits of Pi for fun (I know, it was an interesting kind of fun). At one time, he knew about 200-300 digits of Pi. In case you don't remember from your days in high school math classes, the digits of Pi past the decimal do not repeat, so there is great fun in seeing how many you can remember (or at least Robby thought so!) Now Robby is not alone, there is a Pi Club online that you can join if you can memorize at least 30 digits of Pi or the more exclusive Friends of Pi Club that you can join if you can memorize 100 digits. In the extreme there are people like Hiroyuki Goto who spent years of his life memorizing 42,195 digits of Pi! (Insane if you ask me!)
Anyway, I digress... For this year's Pi Day fun we are going to poll our friends and family to see how many digits of Pi you think that Robby still knows correctly. Post your guess in the comments and on Sunday, March 23rd I will post a videoclip of Robby reciting as many of the digits of Pi as he knows. Don't worry, I won't let him study ahead of time, in fact I will film him today, so you know he didn't study.
Oh, and for a Pi day bonus, here is a link to a song about Pi for all you Pi lovers out there!

I too memorized some digits (12 or 15) of Pi in fifth or sixth grade, but became disillusioned when I happened upon a different source that cited the digits slightly differently from the ones I had memorized.

99. And, yes, he would give impromtu performances during Sunday School class on the digits of Pi. I think it mostly happened when we had a sub . . . so wierdly none of us minded the delay it provided (or maybe each of us secretly wished we could be that smart).

57. And we celebrated pi day in honor of you, Robby.
Good job, Katie! Now that you're working on becoming a naturalized Texas citizen :) the next holiday to add to your calendar is Texas Independence Day (March 2nd). Here are some ideas for celebrating: http://www.ehow.com/how_10189_celebrate-texas-independence.html. Too bad you have to wait almost a full year!
That is definately a different hobby. I think he knows 67.
