Thank you for once again reminding me that the University's image is much more important than those students who make up the body of its campus. May 14th of this year was to be the high point of my husband's university education. He was scheduled to graduate with his doctorate. A pinnacle that took him 13 years of higher education to reach. We have been dreaming about this day for years. This was to be a day for our family to celebrate this huge accomplishment. Not only the five of us in our family, but also our parents and his siblings, who have been our support system through these years of dedication.
All of us have had this day marked on our calendars for almost a complete year. That is until the university decided to make the day "better" or more "memorable" by inviting President Barack Obama to address the graduates. Oh, by the way, Mr. President can't make it to graduation on May 14th, so of course everyone will be glad to change their graduation schedule to May 13th with less than two months to go till graduation to accomodate the President's busy schedule. Never mind that some of us have already bought plane tickets that conflict with the new time. Did we also mention that now graduates can only have a maximum of 6 guests at commencement because everybody and their dog would like to attend commencement now? Forget about the fact that before there was no limitation to the number of guests, just remember that you get to hear the President. This ticket limitation is also for the doctoral candidates who will be hooded and receive their diplomas at this ceremony. And... as in my husband's case, this is the only graduation ceremony that he will have because the School of Business does not recognize their doctoral candidates in their school graduation.
So now we have to choose which of our loving family members will be able to witness my husband walk across the stage to receive his diploma. Let's see, there's me and my three children, his parents, my parents, and his sister and husband. Oops, that's ten! Excuse us for having a large and supportive family.
Thank you ASU administration for reminding me that commencement is all about the big name speaker and has nothing to do with the graduates. Wait, what was this ceremony for anyway?

Oh, how disheartening!! The whole thing is a mess, but most of all, changing previous plans is not okay. If this had been the terms from the beginning, then maybe, but to suddenly change everything so close to graduation is not justified. Wonder if the President knows about this... Perhaps you should write him!
Well put, Sharon. I share your indignation.
I'm sorry, Sharon. That would be extremely frusterating.
I hear you Sharon!!! Brandon is getting his MBA and we were just informed that they changed his graduation ceremony from July to May. Oh, he still has to go to school until July but it just so happens that the date in May is right in the middle of our trip to Poland so we will miss it entirely. I only went through 2 years and am extremely perturbed that there will be no ceremony for us to celebrate with (and family trips were ruined as well). I could go on, but won't. Just know I feel a portion of your pain!!!
I am so sorry! How incredibly frustrating for your family! Not to disrespect the President, but this graduation is definitely NOT about him....or is it? I'm sure there are many families who are just as enraged about this mess as you are. I hope everything turns out okay. *hugs*
Ouch! I'm speechless.
Grrr. Who do they think they are?
Ughhh... that stinks.
Well said. That is so frustrating.
Is there any way to obtain someone else's allotted seats? After all, some don't even want to go to their own ceremony (I had to talk Rex into going to his at OU) or even have family that could afford to fly in (it was just me and Rex while someone babysat our kids). If you have to get tickets or something, maybe you could get some more from someone else. Perhaps there's a message board somewhere on campus for that sort of thing? I don't know -- just a suggestion.
Sharon, you took the words right out of my mouth! I'm very disappointed in the whole situation. But--Robby's graduating! That's most important.
One thing is clear - BO stinks!
Oh Forrest.
Oh Summer, I knew I could count on you to enjoy that
