Last Sunday I asked which of a long list of cities are colder than Ames (colder being defined by average January temperatures).
The answer: Two.
Here they are, listed in order from warmest to coldest:

Congrats to Marilyn for having the closest guess. Marilyn--we'll bring you the promised goodies when we swing by in June '09.
Our most faithful (read: only) Swedish reader, Victoria, suggested that the coldness of a winter might be better measured by something like how long winter lasts. She's got a good point (but my bet is that winter is just as long in Ames as it is in Stockholm).

You better start knitting your hats and mittens now!
Brrrrr... coming from someone who had a fire today when we had temps in the 60's, good luck!
I think Norman's quite cold enough for me. You might have to start hibernating or something. LOL
Hmmm. I thought Wyoming winters were SO MUCH WARMER and easier to live in than Scandinavian winters. Laramie WY being only two degrees above Ames. So I think your list is not telling the whole picture. Still, winter clothes are a must, for sure. :)
Oh Yea ME! I never win! Well, if you'd like to escape the freeze you know where to come.
Rex said no way. Fargo, ND has GOT to be colder than Iowa. Hmmm, maybe we should ask Caren. Anyway, I'm content in south Texas.
Fargo would definitely be colder, as is Minneapolis.
Yeah, we can trump that. Average January temp is 4 degrees. Didn't that figure in somewhere around Siberia on the list? My perspective is somewhat warped. It took me a while to realize that the "low" temperature was that first number on the list. I thought it was the second number, with a negative sign instead of a dash. Of course, right now it's -16 (wind chill -38) so 4 sounds pretty cozy.
