http://viscog.beckman.uiuc.edu/grafs/demos/15.htmlWatch the one minute video found at the link below. You will see two teams of three people each, one in white and the other in black, passing basketballs back and forth to each other. Your task is to count the number of times the white team passes the basketball back and forth in the one minute. It is kind of complex because the players will be moving around while they pass the ball so you have to watch carefully. The study says that there is a gender difference in this kind of attention to detail so I want to see if this is true amongst my friends. Follow the link and watch the video (it is kind of a large file so it takes a minute to load) and then leave a comment with how many times you saw the basketball passed and we will see who does better. And no cheating by reading the comments first!

Perception Test Updated
So, as I noted before youtube.com removed the videoclip that I had linked to my blog, so I searched and found the video clip on the website where the study originated. This one you will have to follow a link to use. This is very interesting and I want to see how you all do. Follow these instructions when viewing the video:

Did you see anything unusual when you watched the video? Go back and watch it again. Do not count the passes but simply watch the video globally. Did you catch it the second time?
Kind of funny, isn't it? How could you have missed it the first time?! I did. The researcher says that this is called perceptual blindness or attention blindness. It happens when you are so focused on one thing or one task that you miss really obvious things. This is like those guys who watch sports on TV so intently that they have no idea someone is talking to them. Or as in my case, I am so intent on working on the computer that I don't notice my baby playing with a red pen.
Oh and by the way, I lied, there is no gender difference. ;) (Telling you that was part of getting you to focus even more intently on the task).
Sorry for the third comment, but I want you to leave a comment and tell us whether you got it the first time.
Okay, I just finally saw this. Will someone please tell me what it is that I missed?
I emailed Connie the answer. So if you missed it and want to know email me.
I totally didn't see it the first time. Weird.
